When the team behind Independent Film Focus started, there was a decision to focus on independent and underground films, and to spotlight them with our reviews. In doing so, occasionally something comes across our desk that is not as independent, and yet it’s clear that it’s worth spotlighting. Enter Enchufe.tv.
Society of the Snow is this ignorant American’s first exposure to Enchufe.tv, and boy did it leave a lasting impression. Right out of the gate, the audience is thrust into chaos along with the soon to be introduced cast, in a scene that feels closer to the show Lost than any comedy sketch most of us are accustomed to witnessing. What follows is a non-stop send up of influencers, with some clever poking at both Gen Z and Millennials.
We’re at a point in time where it feels like we’ve seen almost every kind of joke about influencers and the “younger” generations, and yet Julio Pañi (this pieces writer and director) crafts new ideas built off of known tropes. Additionally, there’s production value, cinematography, and acting that is beyond what we typically see in a comedy video.
Once anyone starts digging further into Enchufe.tv (that is, if they are not already familiar with them— they have 27.7 million subscribers on YouTube alone), this sketch is no surprise at all. Like most things this crew does, Society of the Snow works. It’s quick; it’s funny; and it’s well crafted from all aspects.
